What it is
The Wailea Beach Path is a scenic, paved coastal walk spanning approximately 1.6 miles (one way), or 3.2 miles out-and-back, along the upscale Wailea resort area in South Maui. It meanders along the shoreline, offering views of the Pacific Ocean, offshore islands like Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, and Molokini, and manicured resort properties. The path's surface alternates between paved sections, boardwalk, and in some areas, sand, connecting several white sand beaches including Mokapu Beach, Ulua Beach, Wailea Beach, and Polo Beach.
Visitor experience
Travelers choose the Wailea Beach Path for its stunning ocean views, accessibility, and the opportunity to experience Wailea's luxurious coastline. It's suitable for a range of activities, including leisurely strolls, morning jogs, or romantic sunset walks. Along the path, visitors can access multiple beaches for swimming, snorkeling, or sunbathing. The path passes by several world-class resorts, offering glimpses of their grounds, and provides access to beachfront dining and cafes for refreshments. During winter months (December to April), it's also a popular spot for whale watching. The path is considered an excellent, free island activity, allowing public access to the beautiful Wailea coastline.
Logistics
The Wailea Beach Path is located in the Wailea resort area of South Maui. It stretches from Mokapu Beach (near the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort) in the north to Polo Beach (fronting the Fairmont Kea Lani) in the south.
Access and Parking: The path is publicly accessible, and visitors do not need to be resort guests to use it. Free public parking is available at several beach access points along the path. Recommended parking locations include:
- Ulua Beach parking lot (near the northern end by the Andaz Resort, open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily).
- A free beach parking lot just south of the Grand Wailea Resort (for access to Wailea Beach).
- Polo Beach parking lot (on Kaukahi Street, near the southern end by the Fairmont Kea Lani, officially opens at 7 a.m. but may be open earlier).
Street parking near the resorts is generally not available, making the public beach parking lots the best option.
Timing and Duration: The path can be enjoyed as a quick stop or a longer half-day activity, depending on whether visitors walk the entire length, stop at beaches, or dine at resorts. A full roundtrip walk is approximately 3.2 miles. Early mornings are often recommended for calmer conditions, fewer crowds, and cooler temperatures, while sunsets offer a romantic experience.
Permits: No permits are required to use the public Wailea Beach Path.
Safety and cautions
- Sun Protection: The path has areas with limited shade, so visitors should use broad-spectrum reef-safe sunscreen, wear hats, and bring sunglasses to protect against strong UV rays.
- Hydration: Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer parts of the day.
- Footing: The path surface varies, including pavement, boardwalk, and sand. Be mindful of uneven surfaces, especially near rocky areas or if venturing onto the beaches.
- Crowds: The path can be busy, especially during peak seasons and popular times like sunrise or sunset.
- Ocean Safety: While the path itself is not directly in the ocean, it provides access to beaches. Always be aware of ocean conditions, heed warning signs, and consider swimming only in designated areas. Strong tradewinds can pick up in the afternoons, especially in summer months, affecting beach conditions.
- Respectful Conduct: Visitors should stay on designated trails, take only photos, and leave no trace. Respect marine life, such as sea turtles, by not approaching or harassing them.
Editorial take
The Wailea Beach Path is a highly recommended activity for nearly all Maui visitors staying in or near the Wailea area, or those looking for a picturesque coastal stroll. Its paved, mostly flat terrain makes it accessible for a wide range of fitness levels, from casual walkers to joggers. It's ideal for those who enjoy ocean views, people-watching, and convenient access to upscale amenities without needing a reservation or entry fee.
Prioritize it if: You enjoy scenic walks, want to see several of Wailea's famous beaches and resorts, or are looking for an easy, free outdoor activity that offers both exercise and relaxation. It's particularly appealing for sunrise or sunset experiences.
Skip it if: You are seeking a challenging hike or a secluded, undeveloped natural experience. The path is well-maintained and surrounded by resorts, so it doesn't offer a wilderness feel.
Not to be confused with:
- Kāʻanapali Beach Walk: A similar paved oceanfront path on the west side of Maui, featuring resorts and beaches in Kāʻanapali. While similar in concept, it is a distinct path on a different side of the island.
- Kealia Coastal Boardwalk: A wooden boardwalk in Kihei/Maʻalaea, primarily known for bird watching over the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, offering different scenery and purpose.
- Hiking trails in Haleakalā National Park or West Maui: These are typically more strenuous, unpaved trails through natural landscapes, offering a very different hiking experience than the developed coastal path.
