There are no lifeguards on duty at Pohaku Park, so visitors should exercise caution when entering the ocean. Swimming and snorkeling are not ideal due to consistently murky water caused by localized runoff from a drainage ditch. Ocean conditions can be dynamic, and visitors should be aware of potential dangers such as currents, marine life (including sharks and jellyfish), and never turn their back on the ocean. For surfers, be prepared for a long paddle out to reach the S-Turns break.

Culturally, sea turtles (honu) are protected, and visitors must maintain a safe distance and never touch or feed them. Additionally, the park has served as a community hub for local events and supply distribution for families affected by the Maui fires, and visitors should be mindful and respectful of any ongoing relief efforts or local gatherings. Some reports note a homeless presence in the park area.
