What it is

Kamaole Beach Park III, often called "Kam III," is a popular public beach park located in Kihei, South Maui. It is the southernmost of three adjacent Kamaole Beach Parks (Kam I, II, and III), each separated by rocky outcrops. While all three Kamaole beaches feature golden sand and clear blue water, Kam III is distinct for its expansive grassy park area, plentiful facilities, and a slightly rockier shoreline compared to Kam I and II. It's situated on South Kihei Road, making it easily accessible and close to various accommodations, restaurants, and shops.

Visitor experience

Kamaole Beach Park III is highly regarded as a family-friendly destination offering a diverse range of activities. Its generally calm waters make it suitable for swimming, especially for children, and also good for boogie boarding when waves pick up. The rocky sections at both ends of the beach are ideal for snorkeling, providing opportunities to see vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and occasionally green sea turtles. The park features a large grassy lawn with picnic tables, BBQ grills, and a playground, making it perfect for family gatherings, picnics, games, and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking sunset views over the Pacific, with neighboring islands like Molokini and Kahoʻolawe visible in the distance. During winter months (December to March), it can also be a spot for whale watching.

Logistics

Kamaole Beach Park III is located on South Kihei Road in Wailea, Maui. Access to the beach is straightforward with multiple walkways from the parking area. There is a dedicated parking lot with 84 spaces, as well as some gravel shoulder street-side parking at the far south end of the park. However, the parking lot can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended.

The park offers restrooms, showers, a comfort station, drinking fountains, picnic tables, and BBQ grills. Lifeguards are on duty daily, typically from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (hours may vary).

Timing: Mornings are generally best for calmer waters, swimming, and snorkeling, as trade winds and waves tend to pick up in the afternoon. Late afternoons are popular for sunset viewing.
Duration: It can be a quick stop for a swim or sunset, but with its extensive amenities and activities, it's well-suited for a half-day or even a full-day anchor activity, particularly for families.
Permits/Reservations: No permits are currently required for beach access or parking. However, Maui County plans to launch the "Park Maui" program in early summer 2026, which will institute a fee for non-Hawaii resident parking at all Kamaole Beach Parks. Visitors should verify current parking regulations closer to their travel dates.

Safety and cautions

  • Ocean Conditions: While Kamaole Beach Park III generally offers calm conditions, especially in the mornings, ocean conditions can change rapidly. Waves can become rougher in the afternoons and during south swells or Kona storms, which can create strong rip currents and dangerous shore breaks. It's crucial to check ocean conditions with lifeguards upon arrival and heed all posted safety signs. The sandy offshore bottom can drop quickly to overhead depths, which can be a concern for young children or non-swimmers.
  • Lifeguards: Lifeguards are on duty daily, typically from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, providing an added layer of safety. Always swim in lifeguarded areas.
  • Marine Life: When snorkeling, maintain a safe distance from marine life, especially sea turtles.
  • Sun Protection: Shade on the beach can be limited, so visitors should pack reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and umbrellas. Hawaii has a law banning sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect marine ecosystems.
  • Water Quality: After heavy rain, it's advisable to avoid entering the ocean for at least 72 hours, or until the water clears, as runoff can cause murky conditions and potential bacterial contamination.
  • Crowds: Kamaole Beach Park III is popular with both locals and visitors, and can become very busy on weekends and holidays, particularly the grassy areas.

Kam III, while being the smallest actual beach section, offers the largest park area and is noted for its boogie-boarding waves during certain conditions.
