What it is
Ka'anapali Golf Courses, located in the master-planned Ka'anapali Beach Resort in West Maui, offers two 18-hole championship golf courses: the Royal Ka'anapali Course and the Ka'anapali Kai Course. The courses are situated on historic lands that once housed a sugar cane plantation and served as a vacation retreat for the Royal Chiefs of Maui.
The Royal Ka'anapali Course, a par-71, 6,700-yard course, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1962. It is considered the "grand-daddy" of Maui's golf courses and is one of only two courses in Hawaii designed by Jones Sr. This course has hosted numerous professional golf events, including the Canada Cup (now World Cup of Golf), Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, the LPGA Women's Kemper Open, and the PGA TOUR Champions' Ka'anapali Classic. It features gently sloping fairways, large contoured greens, and winds from sea level up into the West Maui Mountain foothills, offering panoramic ocean and island views.
The Ka'anapali Kai Course, a par-70, 6,400-yard course, was originally created as an executive course, redesigned by Arthur Jack Snyder in 1976, and later renovated by Robin Nelson. It is designed to be a more forgiving course, accommodating all levels of play with subtle, undulating greens, and emphasizes strategy over distance. This course also offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains, with natural canals, lava rock features, and native Hawaiian flora along its fairways. The Kai Course has also hosted professional events, including Golf Channel's Big Break Ka'anapali.
The facility also includes a driving range and practice putting/chipping greens, a pro shop, and offers Callaway Rogue rental clubs.
Visitor experience
Visitors to Ka'anapali Golf Courses can expect a premier golfing experience with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, the islands of Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi, and the West Maui Mountains. Both courses offer a distinct challenge and aesthetic. The Royal Ka'anapali Course is known for its classic layout, forgiving fairways, and challenging greens, with historical plaques on each tee sharing the stories of Ka'anapali. Arnold Palmer famously called its 18th hole one of the best and most challenging he'd ever played due to a brackish water canal running alongside it. The Kai Course provides a more strategic and visually stunning round, with lush fairways, natural canals, and vibrant native flowers.
Golfers choose Ka'anapali for the combination of championship-level play and spectacular Hawaiian scenery. The resort setting makes it convenient for travelers staying in the Ka'anapali area, providing a comprehensive golf resort experience. The courses cater to a range of skill levels, with the Royal Course offering a challenge for avid golfers and the Kai Course being more forgiving and strategy-focused, suitable for beginners and seasoned players alike. In addition to traditional golf, the Ka'anapali Kai course also offers a 9-hole FootGolf layout, combining soccer and golf, which is suitable for all ages and skill levels.
The Golf & Resort Shop offers a variety of Ka'anapali logoed apparel, suitable for the beach, golf course, or dinner.

Editorial take
Ka'anapali Golf Courses are a top choice for golf enthusiasts visiting Maui, especially those staying in the Ka'anapali or nearby Lahaina areas. It offers two distinct, high-quality courses with stunning views and a rich history, making it an excellent anchor activity for a day.
Who should prioritize it: Golfers of all skill levels who appreciate well-maintained courses with picturesque ocean and mountain views. Those interested in playing on courses with a significant professional golf history will particularly enjoy the Royal Ka'anapali Course. Families looking for a unique activity might consider the FootGolf option on the Kai Course.
Who should skip it: Travelers not interested in golf will find little to do here. Those on a strict budget might find the green fees and club rental costs prohibitive compared to other activities on Maui, although twilight rates and dynamic pricing can offer some savings.
Nearby/overlapping entities not to be confused with it:
- Kapalua Golf Courses: Located approximately 10 miles north of Ka'anapali, Kapalua offers the Plantation Course (host of the PGA TOUR's Sentry Tournament of Champions) and the Bay Course. While also premier Maui golf destinations, they are distinct facilities with different course characteristics and history.
- Other Maui Golf Courses: Maui has several other golf courses across the island (e.g., Wailea Golf Club, Maui Nui Golf Club, Kahili Golf Course), each offering different experiences and locations.
- Ka'anapali Beach Resort: While the golf courses are within the resort, the resort itself encompasses much more, including hotels, condominiums, shopping (Whalers Village), dining, and the famous Ka'anapali Beach. The golf courses are one component of the broader resort experience.
