What it is

Ka'anapali Golf Courses, located in the master-planned Ka'anapali Beach Resort in West Maui, offers two 18-hole championship golf courses: the Royal Ka'anapali Course and the Ka'anapali Kai Course. The courses are situated on historic lands that once housed a sugar cane plantation and served as a vacation retreat for the Royal Chiefs of Maui.

The Royal Ka'anapali Course, a par-71, 6,700-yard course, was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1962. Logistics

Area & Access: Ka'anapali Golf Courses are located in the heart of the Ka'anapali Beach Resort, just north of Lahaina in West Maui. Access is convenient, with the main entrance off Ka'anapali Parkway. Many resorts in Ka'anapali are within walking distance or a short trolley ride away.

Reservations & Timing: Tee times are required and reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons, and can be booked online. The courses utilize dynamic pricing, allowing golfers to select tee times and prices that suit their needs. Cancellations must generally be made at least 24 hours in advance to avoid charges. The Golf & Resort Shop is open from "sun up to sun down." Driving range hours vary by season, with summer hours typically starting at 6:00 AM (8:00 AM on Tuesdays) and last buckets sold at 6:00 PM (5:00 PM on Mondays). Winter hours have last buckets sold an hour earlier. Practice putting and chipping greens are open sunrise to sunset.

Parking: On-site parking is available. The driving range is located at the north end of the parking lot. Some free parking options in the wider Ka'anapali area exist, but can be hard to find and fill up quickly.

Permits & Fees: Green fees include a shared golf cart. There is an additional rider fee for those not playing. Rental clubs (Callaway Rogue) are available for a daily fee, with different rates for twilight play and multi-round use. Junior club rentals are also available. Range balls are purchased at the Pro Shop. All rates are subject to change and do not include Hawaii state tax.

Duration: Playing a full 18-hole round on either course typically takes a half-day. This activity is best considered a half-day or anchor activity, depending on whether one plays a single round or takes advantage of practice facilities.

Safety and cautions

Visitors should be prepared for warm and sunny weather, especially during summer months, and bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Trade winds are common in West Maui and can affect play on the course. Golfers should be mindful of standard golf course etiquette. Wildlife, such as various birds, may be present. In winter months, it's possible to see humpback whales offshore from the Kai Course. The Royal Ka'anapali Course features inland ponds and a brackish water canal on its 17th and 18th holes, respectively, which golfers should be aware of.

Guests with rental cars for resort parking structures should verify height clearances.
