What it is

Ho'okipa Beach Park is a renowned beach and ocean park located on Maui's North Shore, just past the town of Paia on the Hana Highway. The name "Ho'okipa" means "hospitality" in Hawaiian. Logistics

  • Area and Access: Ho'okipa Beach Park is located on Maui's North Shore, at Mile Marker #9 on the Hana Highway (Route 36), just past Paia town. From Kahului, it's about a six-mile drive.
  • Parking: There are several parking areas, including an upper parking lot at the Ho'okipa Lookout and additional lots closer to the beach. The road through the parking lot is one-way. Parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. No fees are charged for entry or parking.
  • Reservations/Permits: No reservations or permits are required for general park entry.
  • Timing:
    • Turtle Watching: The late afternoon and evening, typically between 2-4 PM, are prime times to see Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on the shore.
    • Surfing/Windsurfing: Winter months (November to March) bring the largest waves, ideal for experienced surfers. Windsurfing is best during spring and summer when winds are strongest. Surfers generally hit the waves in the morning, while windsurfers dominate in the afternoon when winds pick up.
    • General Visit: Mornings can offer a more serene experience.

It is generally not considered a safe swimming beach for casual visitors due to these hazardous conditions, strong rip currents, and shallow reef. Even experienced swimmers and advanced snorkelers should check ocean conditions with lifeguards before entering the water.
  • Marine Life: Hawaiian green sea turtles are a protected species. Visitors must maintain a respectful distance (at least 10 feet) from turtles both on land and in water and avoid disturbing them. Do not touch the turtles.
  • Reef: An exposed reef runs along much of the shorebreak. Avoid stepping on rocks to protect the ecosystem. Refrain from touching all reefs.
  • Seasonal Variations: Winter months bring larger, more powerful surf, suitable only for highly experienced surfers. Summer months can offer calmer conditions, making the beach potentially more suitable for family use, but caution is still advised.
  • Runoff: After heavy rain, coastal waters may be contaminated by bacteria and pollutants from runoff. It is advised to wait at least 72 hours after heavy rain before entering the water.

Not to be confused with: While other beaches like Tavares Beach (Kuau Beach Park) or Baby Beach in Spreckelsville also offer turtle sightings, Ho'okipa is distinguished by its consistent big waves for surfing/windsurfing and the sheer number of turtles often seen. It's located near Paia town but is a distinct attraction from Paia's main beaches like Baldwin Beach Park, which might offer calmer swimming conditions in designated areas.
